However, scientists caution that more research is needed to fully understand the effectiveness and potential applications of these commercial tools. “The science is still very young,” Timir Datta, assistant professor in the Institute of Bioelectronic Medicine at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, told The Post. Here’s everything you need to know about this trendy therapy, part of the $8.3 billion neurostimulation market. What is vagus nerve stimulation? Datta describes the vagus nerve as a bundle of fibers that runs from the brain to the gut. The vagus is an essential component of the parasympathetic nervous system, primarily responsible for the body’s relaxation response and involuntary actions such as breathing, heart rate, and digestion. Sending electrical impulses to the vagus can affect the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain such as norepinephrine and serotonin, potentially improving mood. VNS has been called “a pacemaker for the brain.” “Stimulating the vagus nerve takes you out of that stressful physiological state. It puts you in a more stable metabolic and healthy state,” Dr. Peter Staats — chief medical officer for Truvaga, a handheld VNS device that launched in 2022 — told The Post. Surgically implanted VNS devices are programmed to deliver gentle, short electrical pulses to the brainstem at regular intervals, such as every five minutes. Truvaga is recommended for use twice a day, with each session lasting two minutes. Pulsetto, a wearable gadget, takes “just four minutes to reduce stress.” Two or three daily sessions are recommended for optimal results. There are other key differences between implantable and handheld VNS. “Since the implantables are in front of the nerve, you can pretty much guarantee that they’re going to do something to the vagus nerve,” Datta explained. With non-invasive devices, “there’s a lot more tissue in between,” he continued. “There is, obviously, your skin, any other tissue, muscle, fat that you might have between the stimulator itself and the nerve, so how it engages the nerve is not well understood.” Truvaga Plus (pictured here) allows unlimited two-minute stimulation sessions. It retails for $499. Truvaga The price and potential downsides also vary. “An implanted device costs about $50,000 and carries significant risk. There’s a risk of damage to what’s called the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which allows you to speak and can cause hoarseness if damaged,” Staats said. “More non-invasive [gadgets]the risks are extremely low and they are relatively cheap.” The Truvaga 350, which allows for 350 two-minute stimulation sessions, retails for $299. Since then, the FDA has cleared non-invasive devices to treat headaches and respiratory problems from COVID-19. Research into potential uses for portable devices continues. “If you were to take a look at disorders like sleep, anxiety, addiction, migraine headaches, cluster headaches, post-traumatic stress disorder, most of the studies on these therapies are non-invasive approaches,” Staats said. He said it is “probably much safer” to have VNS than to take drugs to treat these conditions. Datta suggests waiting “for the science to be a little more developed” before purchasing a VNS device, unless your doctor specifically recommends one. In March of 2020, I was 17 years old, shopping for prom dresses and ordering my cap and gown for my high school graduation, when the world suddenly shut down. The celebrations were stunted. Excitement was replaced by intense fear for our lives, health and future. Gen Z suffered. I suffered. And I didn’t know how to pull myself together. It’s been five years since the pandemic began, and the anxiety that plagued me during that first year has haunted me for the rest of my life. Carrie Berk, now 22, was 17 and a senior in high school when the COVID-19 pandemic began — and she says she’s still suffering today. Courtesy of Carrie Berk It was easy to fake being okay at first – but when reality hit me, it was like my entire vision of senior year activities was shattered. I shoved the prom dress I spent months searching the internet for in the back of my closet. I thought prom would be my chance to stand out and have one last hurray before going to college. Now, I would never have that opportunity. I felt so isolated. My school friends were not allowed to see me. There was a curfew in New York City, where I live, and there were no coffee shops or restaurants where we could meet. My parents wouldn’t let me go out except for the grocery store. We retreated to our home on Long Island to separate further. About six months into the pandemic, I had my first panic attack. I was sitting on the couch with my mom watching a movie when suddenly I couldn’t breathe. I asked for an inhaler and even went for a COVID test the next day, but nothing was physically wrong. My anxiety manifested as other physical symptoms: shortness of breath, sweaty palms, and insomnia. But I still didn’t make the connection that it was anxiety until a friend told me she self-harmed. From that day on, I couldn’t shake the thought that I too would reach a point where I could hurt myself like she did. The pandemic caused anxiety and panic attacks, and she says she’s not the same — and neither are some of her friends. Nigel Barker I managed to convince myself that anyone who suffers from anxiety is doomed and that their life is over. I stared at the ceiling all day wondering why I was thinking about suicide so much when I wanted to live so much. I spent months just going through the motions of my daily routine. Anxiety took the color out of my life and I couldn’t have fun without being drowned in intrusive thoughts. I didn’t know myself anymore. During the holidays that year, I finally went to therapy and was diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. We went through exposure therapy to desensitize me to my intrusive thoughts, which included everything from looking at a picture of a razor to closing my eyes and visualizing the thought in vivid detail. I struggled for about six months before turning the corner. Once I started to expect anxiety and intrusive thoughts, I wasn’t so afraid of them. I realized that no matter how intense my thoughts were, I still made it through the day. Studies show that approximately 50% of adults between the ages of 18 and 24 suffer from anxiety. Adulthood is hard enough—we go to college, start dating, and spend hours on LinkedIn looking for jobs. The anxiety that Gen Z has faced as a direct result of the pandemic is not fair. I believe my anxiety and OCD would have eventually manifested in one way or another, but I’m sure the loneliness brought on by the pandemic was my trigger. Berk says the loneliness of the pandemic triggered her OCD, and her anxiety is still “huge.” Getty Images It was hard to convince myself that life was worth living when, in 2020, there wasn’t much life left to live. The impact of the pandemic on my mental health resonates today. Every summer since 2020, I’ve avoided going back to our house on Long Island because I feel triggered. The lavender essential oil I smelled to soothe myself after exposure therapy still sits on the nightstand. I’ve been gone five years at this point, and the anxiety is still great. To date, I have never had a prom or high school graduation. These are big milestones and the fact that they are forever missing from my life has left a scar. I’m not the only one at my age who still feels the impact. One of my friends used to be a theater kid, but has been much softer since the pandemic. A new UK study highlights the significant health risks of constant exposure to airplane noise, which is bad news for the 40 million Americans who live near major airports. Researchers from University College London (UCL) analyzed the health records of 3,600 airport neighbors and 21,300 people who do not live near a flight path to examine the effects of significant and moderate aircraft turbulence compared to no noise. Past research has linked constant aircraft noise to sleep disturbances, increased stress, cognitive impairment in children, weight gain and a higher risk of high blood pressure and heart disease. Getty Images Residents exposed to the worst rockets, especially at night, had stiffer and thicker heart muscles that doubled or quadrupled the risk of a heart attack, life-threatening heart rhythm or stroke, the researchers said. “Our study is observational, so we can’t say for sure that high levels of aircraft noise caused these changes in heart structure and function,” said senior study author and cardiologist Dr. Gaby Captured. “However, our findings add to a growing body of evidence that aircraft noise can negatively affect heart health and our health in general,” added Captur. The loudest noise was defined as exceeding an average of 50 decibels during the day and 45 decibels between 11pm and 7am Fifty decibels is generally considered to be the equivalent of a fridge humming. The World Health Organization recommends limiting aircraft noise during the day to 45 decibels and nighttime noise to 40 decibels to avoid adverse health effects. Compared to the noise of roads or railways, planes tend to be louder and more unpredictable, so it is difficult to get used to them, the UCL researchers said.
