This fast-food refuses to be “overgrown” by its questionable diet.
While most people are cutting back on their food intake in the New Year, competitive eater Zach Zona is taking on an extreme McDonald’s revenge to prove he’s not gaining weight.
Known for his fast-eating feats, the professional burger eater has vowed to eat food from the Golden Arches every day for 100 days. He regularly chronicles his quarter-pounder pilgrimage to his 22,000-plus followers on Instagram, where he goes by @zonaeats.
After launching the Fry-athlon in November, the kitchen crash test dummy is about halfway to its goal.
Zona recently celebrated the 40th day of the diet by placing a Double Quarter Pounder with cheese and a McCrispy Deluxe in his drive. “Gotta get this off, it’s really late today,” he declared to Pacmanning the double fast food.
The goal is to prove that he won’t pack on the pounds despite eating nothing but burgers and fries. It’s basically the opposite of Super Size Me, where independent filmmaker Morgan Spurlock embarked on a monthly McDonald’s marathon to illustrate the negative effects of fast food.
Perhaps one big difference—besides the length of the streak—is that Zona is training fanatically during Fry’s January.
Not only is the area refraining from piling on the flames, but he is allegedly losing weight on the hamburger diet.
The competitive eater posted a video of himself weighing himself on day 18, which showed he had actually dropped four kilos from his starting weight.
However, viewers on Instagram were skeptical of his so-called immunity to the fast food onslaught.
“You can stay the exact same weight and still clog your arteries to the point of a heart attack,” warned one commenter.
Another wrote: “You don’t gain weight in 100 days at McDonald’s, not immediately, but you damage your metabolism long term by damaging your gut bacteria with all the additives and chemicals in it and that doesn’t come back easily.”
“Just because you’re not gaining weight doesn’t mean your liver, kidneys and heart aren’t working harder than they should be,” warned a third. “Inside, things are changing. Be mindful.”
Indeed, the negative effects of McDonald’s extend beyond simple weight gain and can include high blood pressure, inflammation, a higher risk of heart disease and even greater chances of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, they warn health experts.
That said, nutritionists say some McDonald’s dishes are more harmful than others, while some aren’t half bad for your health.
Kristen Carli, owner of Camelback Nutrition & Wellness, claimed that the best McDonald’s lunch order for weight loss—a seemingly paradoxical phrase—is the McDonald’s Classic Burger with an apple slice and an unsweetened iced tea.
“Opting for a basic burger, like a McDonald’s hamburger or cheeseburger, provides protein and some carbs without excess calories from cheese or mayo,” she said.
