Dry January just got a whole lot more rock ‘n roll.
WhistlePig Whiskey has released a new “Sex, Drugs, Rock & Dry” Old Fashioned mocktail that’s not only alcohol-free, but also made with health-enhancing ingredients.
Rock star Alice Cooper, who has been sober since 1977, said the drink is “the true embodiment of dry cocktails”.
Cooper, 76, has been open about his decades of sobriety, once admitting there was a time in the 70s when he drank at least a bottle of whiskey a day.
“I lived a life of excess,” he told The Post. “You wouldn’t believe the poison I put into my body.”
After a few health scares — and a doctor’s warning that he would die within months — Cooper entered rehab and has been sober ever since.
But the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer still likes to “feed my Frankenstein” and has signed on to promote WhiskeyPig’s new mocktail, which he says “allows everyone to still be punk without being drunk.”
A 750ml bottle, retailing for $49.99, is made with 100% non-rye whiskey to give it its traditional flavor.
It also has damiana, a plant that is used to flavor some Mexican drinks and was used for its medicinal properties in the Mayan culture. Damiana is touted to have antibacterial properties, as well as lowering blood sugar, preventing cancer and reducing anxiety. Intriguingly, it is also often referred to as an aphrodisiac.
The mocktail mix is also made with Schisandra berries, which have long been used in traditional Chinese medicine – and studies have suggested it can help with depression, slow Alzheimer’s and even improve liver disease.
Finally, the Dry Old Fashioned has Cordyceps mushrooms, which have been linked to a number of health benefits, including reducing inflammation, helping with stress, increasing collagen in the skin, and lowering blood sugar.
“These mild mushrooms are what give your energy levels a nightmare-worthy boost,” Cooper said.
“I’m telling you, this is the real sick of dry cocktails. It’s a sober man’s dry dream.”
As for the aroma, the brand says the top notes are “summer berries, wild herbs and black pepper,” followed by candied lime and smoked mushroom.
Reporters who tried it at The Post thought it smelled a bit like an alcoholic drink and were surprised by its spicy kick.
Coming this spring, the mocktail will also be sold as part of a bundle with a liquid rye vinyl of Alice Cooper’s Breadcrumbs album for $199.99.
Plus, 100% of the profits from the sale of the Dry Old Fashioned will be donated to the nonprofit organization Giving Kitchen, which provides assistance to food service workers.
