A mother refuses to leave a penny of her children’s inheritance – instead using her “hard-earned” cash to further her career and buy clothes to perform in.
Janey Kirk, 60, says her children, Carla, 30, and Adam, 26, are “in the same frame of mind” and stand by her controversial choices – wanting their mum to be happy.
Despite money being out of the cards, Janey will leave her house, car and Airbnb business to her children, but wants to make sure they work hard to understand the value of money.
Janey suggests that parents with “idiot” children should not leave money to them – as she believes they will “waste and squander it”.
Janey spends what she needs “when she needs to” and says her children have to work “all their days” to be in the same position.
Believing that inheritance money is more of a “modern thing”, Janey says her mother and father never left her any money.
Janey, a singer from Fife, Scotland, said: “I’ve always believed that your home is good enough to leave.
“If you’re a young 60-year-old like me, I don’t think I should be taking money away from my kids when I can use it to further mine and Carla’s careers, go on working holidays and buy new clothes. to work on.
“If I didn’t have to take care of my mother, then I would probably be in Greece every month.
“I don’t throw money away, I spend it as I need and use it as I need.
“When I die, if there’s anything left, then of course it’s theirs.
“I’m very old-fashioned, I had to work all my days to be in that position, so they should too.
“It’s their life to do that – I’m here for advice and stuff like that.
“I have good insurance on my death and my house and everything I own will be theirs, but I’m not going anywhere anytime soon and they could be in their 70s or 80s by the time I kick the bucket!
“I’m afraid that saving my future comes first.”
Janey says she gave them some money — about $3,750 — when they were younger, but that’s now gone.
She said: “They have spent it all on vacations, etc.
“So once it was used, I never bothered adding more.”
Carla is following in her mother’s footsteps – taking up a life in the arts and they often perform as a duo on TV together.
Janey said: “Carla doesn’t need it, she’s singing and earning well.
“She has a song that has gone viral called ‘If You Love Me Let Me Know’ with 19 million views.”
“When we’re on TV shows when we’re both singing, it generates income from people searching for you on Google and buying our CDs and DVDs that we’ve made.
“It’s all being used to further my career and hers.
“I never ask Carla to pay – when the songs are ready, I make a music video that again generates permanent income that I will leave to Carla.
“There is a method to my madness in not setting aside money for them.”
Despite her polarizing beliefs, Janey says her kids are totally on board.
She added: “Their thoughts are the same as mine – they’re in the same frame of mind.
“They encourage me to enjoy things.
“I give them all my time now and I’d rather give them a little while I’m alive when they need it and see what they get for it.”
As for other people, Janey believes it’s a circumstantial decision, but says parents with “idiot” children shouldn’t leave any behind.
She said: “It all depends on the children you have.
“Some people have idiots as children and I don’t think they deserve it.
“If you have capable children then I believe it would be a good idea if you can afford it to put the money aside – I just don’t have any.
“If I had a studious family and they needed it for college and university, then that’s a different situation and I’d look at it – it’s all about the kids.
“But most of them are just idiots.
“Adam’s a great guy and as long as he’s happy doing what he’s doing then I’m happy.
“Carla has her career as a singer.
“Adam has an endless pot of money, especially for him if he ever gets stuck.
“He never abuses it, and often a twenty pound note will last for weeks.
“That’s a lot better than saving up for him, knowing he’s never stuck for money.”
Janey’s TV show can be seen every Saturday night at 10.30pm on Sky on Channel 588.
