Rising fitness trends and the most popular workouts of 2024

The fastest growing workout of 2024 drew a bit of Tonya Harding into the competition.

While it wasn’t the most booked exercise on ClassPass — that honor goes to Pilates, which users did 84% more than in 2023 — ice skating saw a massive increase in bookings this year, with bookings up 698%

According to the app’s year-end report, “community-centered activities” and team sports saw a surge in popularity this year.

Ice skating was the most dramatic of all, increasing by 698%. As a workout, it targets muscles throughout the body, and despite the freezing temperatures, it’s sure to work up a sweat.

“Skaters exercise almost every muscle in the body,” fitness expert Nataly Komova told Woman & Home. “This is partly due to the synchronized movement of the feet that occurs while skating, which in the long run increases the flexibility of the joints. It is also good for the heart as movement and exercise improve circulation and heart rate.

Peter Zapalo, director of sports science and medicine for USA Figure Skating, agrees.

“It has cardiovascular benefits as it works your aerobic and anaerobic systems, and it’s a fantastic total body challenge for your core, balance, coordination and posterior chain,” he told Vogue.

“Also: Skaters have great behinds,” he added.

“But the really interesting thing is this [the sport] trains total body proprioception – the ability to sense your body’s position, movement and balance.”

As for other growth trends, volleyball is also up 256%, while soccer is up 158% since last year, all of which ClassPass attributes to Olympic excitement over the summer, as well as the anticipation of the 2026 Winter Olympics. .

But even though all three sports were booked much more than usual, they still couldn’t compete with the best exercises done by app users.

Following Pilates at number one – for the second year in a row – were yoga, strength training, cycling, barbells, boxing, “general gym time”, running, dancing and low-impact exercise.

ClassPass also measures when people are working. Tuesday was the most popular day of the week, followed by Wednesday, Monday and Thursday, as most people had time to sweat during the work week.

It might come as a surprise that users were more likely to take a break over the weekend, with Sunday being the least popular day for a workout. There was a peak of bookings just after work at 5.30pm.

The report states that these trends are for the period from October 2023 to October 2024.
